Workshops in Lynden Washington
Hello Fiber Enthusiasts,
Fibers and Beyond 2016 is coming soon, and we are excited about the workshops, exhibits, and the weavers’ sale that will be part of it. Come visit us in Lynden WA in October at the Jansen Art Center!
Sheri Ward
Fibers and Beyond 2016 Committee
And here’s information about one of the workshops, especially for those of you who may be thinking about learning to weave or want to know more about rigid heddle weaving!
The loom and all supplies are provided for this beginning weaving class. Rigid heddle weaving is easy to learn and fast to weave. The loom is very portable and affordable. You will learn to set up the loom and to weave. In this day-long class you will become a weaver and in the process you will weave a scarf. You will learn about selecting yarns, putting them on the loom, preparing the yarn for weaving, using shuttles, weaving techniques and finishing techniques. You will learn enough to weave on your own after the class.
For experienced weavers, there will be a display of more advanced weaving techniques and discussion of pattern weaving using two heddles.
Joanne Hall is a weaver, teacher and author. Joanne started the Elkhorn Mountains Weaving Studio in Montana City, Montana, where she weaves tapestries and teaches weaving classes.
For this class, registration is $85, and there is a materials fee of $35.
Other classes that still have openings are:
· Deflected Double Weave with Liz Moncrief
· 3-D Design & Surface Manipulation on Felt with Flora Carlile Kovacs
· Band Weaving & Back Strap with Joanne Hall
· Nuno Felted Scarf with Flora Carlile Kovacs
More information about these workshops is on the Jansen’s website, and all registrations are through the Jansen Art Center, at www.jansenartcenter.org/shop

Mid Island Weavers and Spinners Guild meeting for April 2016
MIWS
AGM Guild Meeting April 2016
15
members present
Old
Business
We
discussed ANWG conference and sending them money for the bags that
will be recyclable. Heather Sinclair moved that we send money as they
need a commitment by June and we didn't think they were going to
order things (like cups) from China and it would be local. Kathy
McDonald seconded it and all were in favor. Lynn brought up the
Romney Batt from Birkland Brothers Julie Getting moved that we use
it for the booth and seconded by Margo Turner. All were in favor,
and it was divided up for people to spin and dye or felt for our ANWG
booth.
One
of our Life members Evelyn Hempinstall died recently. I tried to find
more information but was unable to.
New
Business
It
was suggested we have a picnic in the park in the summer and take
spinning and weaving to promote the guild. We could hand out
information and make cards. $50 for 500 cards. We need new contacts
and information. Some one was going to talk to Crystal before
ordering. Liz Kaarremaa moved we spend the$50 and Margo Turner
Seconded the motion and all were in favor.
Agenda
for May meeting Crystal. Liz has had contact with Sylvia Olson on a
workshop with Sylvia on Salish Knitting. Sylvia has been doing a PhD
and after may will be in contact. Meeting Adjourned by Jeannette
Brooks.
Kathy
McDonald says there is a New Societies Act which we will need to find
out about and get registered.
We
then had our AGM
Lynne
Vander Linde has agreed to continue on as President
Jeannette
Brooks is going to take over as secretary from me
Crystal
We hope is continuing as treasurer-to be confirmed soon
Margo
Turner will continues as the librarian
We
had a great Show and Tell and if I can I will post [pictures when I
get a chance.
Liz
Kaarremaa gave an excellent talk on Coast Salish Spinning and the
research she has done on the dog hair used in spinning for her final
level, 6, of her master Spinners Certificate.
Tea
and goodies provided Darlene Booth and Anne Fiddick
